Coming clutch late in 2023, this is one of if not the most fun movie of the year. I was skeptical coming into this having seen the previous two and certain it wouldn't be like the others.
In a sense, I was correct. This is my favorite Wonka movie and the one with the most heart. Timothee Chalamet is in a lot now, and there was a sense of Chalamet fatigue but genuinely he is as good (and maybe better) as Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp.
His witty and silliness might hit some the wrong way and come off as cringe, but for me, it worked. He bubbly spirit really bled off the screen and made me smile and laugh at a lot. I love how this movie combines magic and chocolate. There is no explanation, and it makes it a point to not have to explain his methods but explain his story and why his heart and dreams are as big as they are. Tying in his mother to everything was new to a Wonka movie, and I felt the love between them.
I bought in almost instantly and thoroughly had a great time. His beautiful friendship with Noodle was genuine and one that paid dividends in the end. The same applied to all the other side characters and even the Oompa Loompa.
No complaints other than it wasn't one of the best best movies of the year but one I didn't expect to love by the credits!
